Safety First - Water and Electricity Don't Mix
There are things that you should absolutely NOT do when you have water damage in your home or business. Some of these things can cause serious injury or death. Other things can make your items unrecoverable or impossible to restoe.

Do NOT use your household vacuum to remove water!
Serious injury or death can occur from electric shock! Additionally, you'll ruin your vacuum.

Do NOT use electrical appliances like TVs, stereos, or electic fans while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors!

Do NOT turn on ceiling lights or fans if ceiling is wet.
You can be seriously injured or die from electric shock and/or cause an electrical short that can start a fire. Also, a spinning ceiling fan on a wet ceiling could come loose and seriously injury or kill someone.

Do NOT go into rooms rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water!
Water is heavy and can accumulate in your ceiling. It's impossible to tell how much water is accumulated without the right tools.
The water weakens the drywall or plaster and eventually the weight of the water can come crashing down. You can be seriously injured or killed if the ceiling collapses on top of you.

Do NOT poke a hole in your ceiling to releave pressure or drain your ceiling.
As mentioned above, it's impossible to tell how much water is accumulated. If there is a lot of water, a small hole will be rip appart by the force of the water and can bring down the entire ceiling on top of you.

Do NOT go into your basement to shut off the power if your basement is flooded.
Serious injury or death from electrical shock can occur. Call your electric company and tell them you have an emergency and need the power shut off.

Do NOT turn off the water supply if there is risk of electricution.
Many homes have the water supply valve in the basement. Because the power supply is often found in the basement, it may be better to contact a plumber immediately.
